Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of massage therapy?
Massage therapy has been shown to reduce pain, muscle spasms, tension, anxiety, depression, headaches, blood pressure and heart rate. Additionally, it has been shown to increase immune system activity, production of endorphins, muscle flexibility, muscle tone, range of motion, and body awareness. This is only a very brief listing of benefits. For more information on the benefits of massage visit the Touch Research Institute at:

How often should I come for massage therapy treatment?
This depends on why you are seeking massage. If you are dealing with an acute problem the best strategy is to schedule a number of visits close together (1-2 times per week) for the first few treatments, and then decrease frequency as the problem improves.

If you live a very active lifestyle and deal with moderate to high levels of stress and have considerable aches, pains, and tension; a weekly or bi-weekly schedule has been effective for many clients.

If you live a less active lifestyle and deal with minimal stress and are interested in the benefit of wellness and relaxation, bi-weekly to monthly visits or as often as you are able, is recommended.

It is important to understand that the tension and pain that you hold in your body and mind has accumulated over a lifetime and generally will not be "cured" in one session. Massage therapy is most effective when received consistently. This is particularly true if your lifestyle and job results in repetitive stress injuries and pain.

What can I expect before my massage?
Lorin will ask you to complete a confidential intake form to ensure that she provides you with the best possible massage treatment. She will ask you about your expectations for the massage and suggest a treatment plan for you.

You will undress privately in the treatment room as far as you are comfortable and lie under the sheet and blanket for your treatment. Some people keep their underwear on and others remove it to allow better access to the low back area. It is recommended that women remove their bras to allow full access to the back and shoulders, however, it is possible to give an effective and thorough massage through clothing or draping. Your comfort is always the first priority.

It is recommended that you do not eat right before your massage and that you use the bathroom prior to treatment so you are able to relax completely.

What can I expect during my massage?
During your massage Lorin will address your areas of concern and follow the treatment plan as laid out for you prior to treatment. She will check in with you a few times during the massage treatment to make sure you are comfortable and that the pressure is to your liking. If at any time during the treatment you would like anything changed (i.e., pressure, music, temperature, etc.) please let Lorin know. This treatment is all about you!

You will be modestly draped at all times. Lorin will un-drape each area as she works on it and will re-drape before moving on to the next.

As for conversation, it is up to you. Many people, including Lorin, enjoy their massages without conversation to enhance relaxation. Others however, just love to chat, and that’s okay too!

Lorin does play relaxing music during the massage to help your mind drift away from the realities of everyday life. If you have a favorite CD for relaxing, please feel free to bring it in!

What can I expect after my massage?
Lorin will leave the room after your massage so that you may dress. Many clients like to stay in the studio for a few minutes and have some water or tea before driving home and you should feel welcome to do so.

If you have requested a deep therapeutic treatment, it is possible that you may be sore for a day or two following your massage, much like you would feel after a good workout. If this soreness lasts longer please communicate this to Lorin so that the pressure can be adjusted on your next visit.

What type of payments do you accept?
You are welcome to pay with cash, or a personal check.

What is your late/cancellation policy?
If you are late for an appointment, Lorin will try to accommodate you, schedule permitting. However, if the schedule does not allow for this type of accommodation, you will still be given the same time slot and your appointment will be shortened. For example, if you are 15 minutes late for an hour appointment, you will receive a 45 minute massage and you will be charged for the full hour.

A minimum of 24 hours notice is requested for cancellations. If less than 24 hours notice is given, you will be billed and expected to pay the full amount for the session.
